Australia’s most notorious drug smuggler returns from Bali

Thanks god this 13 year nightmare story has come to a end .

Although her poor judgement to bring kilos of drugs into a country that has the death penalty  was a major mistake that not only caused her years of depression and tarnished Bali reputation with all the bleeding hearts we wish her all the best.

Everyone deserves a second chance.

SYDNEY — Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Corby, whose trial and imprisonment on Indonesia’s tourist island of Bali mesmerized her country for more than a decade, returned home Sunday.

Corby landed in the Queensland capital of Brisbane early Sunday morning, after she was deported from Bali amid a frenzy of journalists. More than 200 police officers were deployed to secure her departure from Denpasar, Bali’s capital, said Ida Bagus Adnyana, who heads Bali’s Justice and Human Rights office.

“Corby signed a document to end her parole. She is completely free now,” he said.

Back on Australian soil, she managed to evade the waiting media throng and slip out of the airport unseen. A member of Corby’s security team, Eleanor Whitman, read a statement to journalists on behalf of the family.

“To all those in Australia and all those in Bali who have been there throughout this difficult journey, your support has not gone unnoticed,” the statement said. “The priority of our focus will now be on healing and moving forward.”

Corby was arrested in 2004 at the age of 27 after customs officers at Bali’s airport found more than 4 kilograms (9 pounds) of marijuana inside her boogie board bag, sparking a media frenzy in Australia on par with America’s O.J. Simpson trial.

Corby always insisted the drugs had been planted in her bag, and most Australians initially believed her story. Her courtroom battle was tailor-made for TV: a photogenic Australian beach girl who had apparently fallen victim to corrupt officials in an Asian country that had come to be viewed with fear and suspicion after dozens of Australians were killed in the 2002 Bali bombings.

Indonesians, who called Corby “Ganja Queen,” were mystified by Australia’s response. To them, the case was clear-cut, and the Australian outrage overly nationalistic.

Corby’s insistence that the drugs were planted by baggage handlers was dismissed as lies by Balinese prosecutors. A court sentenced her to 20 years in prison, though that was later reduced.

In 2014, after nine years behind bars, she was released but had to stay in Bali until her parole expired on Saturday. In the lead-up to her deportation, she kept a low profile, living in a villa in Bali with her Indonesian boyfriend.

Australian media spent two weeks camped outside the villa, attempting to catch a glimpse of the elusive drug smuggler.

Hoping to fool reporters, friends and family members took to donning bizarre face masks as they went to and from the property.

Though proving Corby’s innocence was once something of a national cause in Australia, unflattering reports about her family emerged over the years, sullying her image in many Australians’ eyes. Today, few Australians still believe Corby’s story but remain fascinated by the saga.

Under Australian law, she will not be able to directly profit from telling her story.

Bali today and yesterday: India could 'learn something' from the paradise island of Indonesia

By CLAUDE ARPI

PUBLISHED: 00:35 BST, 28 May 2017 | UPDATED: 01:17 BST, 28 May 2017
Since my teenage years, Bali was a dream. I remember turning again and again the pages of tiny photo book by Henri Cartier-Bresson, the famed French photographer and founder of Magnum Agency.

The book, Les Danses à Bali ('Dances in Bali') was published soon after the photographer's visit to the island in 1949.

With his exquisite art of catching expressions, Cartier-Bresson depicted the dancing schools of the island which enact some of the powerful scenes of the Ramayana, mostly portrayed by young tiny Balinese girls.

+4

The Photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, pictured in 1981, captured the peaceful and spiritual atmosphere of Bali after visiting the island

More than 65 years later, many things have changed on the island, but the peaceful spiritual atmosphere caught by the lens of Cartier-Bresson's Leica remains — with a difference, the hundreds of thousands of tourists.

I could myself witness these changes during a recent visit to the 'paradise' island of Indonesia.

The first 'incredible' experience is the arrival at Denpasar International Airport. Walking towards the immigration's counters, I could see hundreds of visitors of different nationalities — Westerners, Chinese, Malaysian, Japanese, and a few Indians — queuing for a visa.

+4

Rice terraces in Bali. Just one of many features to attract more and more visitors to the island

I thought to myself, 'Oh no, it may take at least two hours before we get out of the airport.'

We were in for a surprise — in less than 20 minutes, we were through. Being used to the Indian system (which has improved in recent years), I could not believe the speed with which the immigration officers were issuing visa-on arrival.

They just scan your passport, which is then stamped and that is it. I recalled the cumbersome Inner Line Permit still in force in many states of India's Northeast.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, or Pura Bratan, is a major Shivaite and water temple on Bali, Indonesia. The temple complex is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul. Water temples serve the entire region in the outflow area.

Why can't the Government of India introduce such a system in India when visitors want to enter Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland?

The babus of India are unfortunately unable to understand simplicity and efficiency; their system has to be complicated so that they are able to keep some 'control'.

It is not that Bali has not faced security issues. On October 12, 2002, 202 people (including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians) were killed in a suicide bomb attack.

Another attack occurred three years later, killing four foreigners. But while 'security' is taken care of, the visitors are welcomed with a smile and a thunderous 'How are you, Sir/Ma'am'.

India certainly has a lot to learn. A comparison with the northeast is interesting. Like the Balinese, its inhabitants are fun-loving and always smiling; they speak good English and are rather 'relaxed', furthermore, they are great hosts.

The Seven (or Eight) Sisters could become the hub of domestic tourism if Delhi could understand the potential of tourism for the economy and the integration of the northeast.

One evening, watching the Ramayana enacted by a large group of Balinese dancers and a choir 'in trance', I noticed how the island has become cosmopolitan while still being anchored deeply in its Hindu tradition.

Was the way the main characters of the epic perform their roles now different from the one witnessed by Cartier-Bresson in 1949? Probably not.

Sitting there, I was fascinated by the haunting chants of the choir, the battle between Good and Evil, with Sita prisoner of the evil Ravana and Hanuman jumping through and interacting with the crowd, to the amusement of all.

Perhaps even more interesting, I happened to be surrounded by vociferous Muslim ladies from Malaysia, fully participating in the high drama on the stage.

It was probably the magic of Hinduism to bring together such a motley crowd, vibrating in unison.

Another interesting aspect linked with the island's present situation is the arrival of waves of Chinese visitors, linked with the much-talked about the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative of President Xi Jinping.

Indonesia would like to participate in the ambitious dream by attracting 10 million tourists from China by 2019.

The latest data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) show that 1.43 million Chinese tourists visited Bali in 2016, representing a 25 per cent annual increase over the previous year.

+4

Sunset at Uluwatu temple in southern Bali. For Indonesia, tourism is a major source of revenue

The 10-million benchmark may be difficult to achieve for the Indonesian tourist industry.

Moreover, a survey recently revealed that the typical Chinese tourist visiting Bali spends only one quarter of what is spent by their European and Australian counterpart.

While for Indonesia, tourism is a source of hefty revenue, for China, it means a presence in South-East Asia.

Agence France Press recently spoke of China's new weapon in the economic war, i.e. tourism, explaining: 'Slapping import bans on products like mangoes, coal and salmon has long been China's way of punishing countries that refuse to toe its political line. But Beijing has shown that it can also hurt others by cutting a lucrative Chinese export, tourism.'

The article quotes the example of South Korea over a US anti-missile shield and the ban on Chinese tour groups from visiting Korea.

Similarly, tourism to Taiwan has also fallen sharply as relations across the strait worsened.

Countries submitting to China's demands are rewarded and those who do not 'behave' are punished. Closer to us, the Pakistani newspaper Dawn published earlier this month the 'hidden' report on CPEC.

One of the chapters speaks about the development of a 'coastal tourism' industry; a long belt of coastal enjoyment industry that includes yacht wharfs, cruise homeports, nightlife, city parks, public squares, theatres, golf courses and spas, hot spring hotels and water sports.

The report adds: 'for the development of coastal vacation products, Islamic culture, historical culture, folk culture and marine culture shall all be integrated.'

Many see this as a new form of colonisation, though this is far from being the case in Bali as yet. The point remains that India has still a lot to learn from the island in terms of hospitality and cleanliness.

As Predicted by Bali Expert Bali Real Estate is on the Move again

At the beginning of this year we ran Bali Real Estate seminars for the first time in three years on Bali Real Estate.

At the seminars we stated that the "first downturn in modern history of Bali real estate was probably over" and that "buyers should buy at prices 20% to 50% off 2014 prices.

"First downturn in modern history of Bali real estate was probably over"

Since that prediction the buyers are definitely back. Two weeks ago we had the busiest week I've had in years. Many are still looking but soon they will start buying. A small hotel that we had listed at the Seminar was sold by another broker .

Further bullish news is shown below in that there was record attendance at a recent sale of Apartments in Jakarta.

This coupled with a strong economy and Indonesians with money in their pocket means that the base demand for all real estate in Indonesia, including Bali from locals will increase along with prices in the near future.
Don't procrastinate buy now at what we believe is  "the second best time to buy real estate this century".

Free Bali Real Estate Seminars:

If you wish to educate your self first attend one of our free forthcoming free educational seminars.

We believe that the stimulus for the next round of increases will be recent changes and clarification in foreign ownership laws for Bali real estate which were clearly detailed in the seminar held this past Saturday.

Since one of our owners Azizah, is a fully qualified Indonesian Government Authorized Notaris we receive the latest changes in Indonesian ownership laws by email and Seminars the moment they are issued. So we are one of the first in our industry to share these changes.

Many real estate owners who purchased the last two years are depressed and worried especially if they have purchased Bali properties with what's called the nominee system. We have been been warning for the past 15 years the Nominee System is illegal and a grey area of  law.
In March 2014 a Govt. Minister also warned that Nominee agreements are illegal and that foreigners may lose their property.

Most of this years  seminar attendees came because they wanted to know about new changes in foreign ownership laws allowing foreigners to have up to 80 years ownership and bank financing with full legal control of Bali properties under their own name.

We believe this large showing and additional bookings for this week's coming seminar indicate that the market is at the beginning of a major bull market that will last 3-10 years.

Right now you can still purchase property at a 20 % to 40 % discount from 2014 prices.

Meikarta apartments sale has broken the record of Indonesia's Museum of Records, or MURI, for the largest number of buyers in one day.

Meikarta Breaks MURI Record for Biggest Apartment Salei

Cikarang. The grand launching of the Meikarta apartments sale has broken the record of Indonesia's Museum of Records, or MURI, for the largest number of buyers in one day.

Meikarta is a giant city developed by Lippo Group near Jakarta.

MURI senior manager Yusuf Ngadri said on Saturday (13/05) that Meikarta managed to sell 16,800 units.

"This is an incredibly huge number," he said, adding that the figure broke MURI's previous record for subsidized apartments, of which 300 units were sold in a single day.

Yusuf said it may be difficult to break the record of Meikarta, which has proven itself attractive to buyers.

"It was incredible, it came as a surprise after hard work of Lippo Group," Meikarta project president Ketut Budi Widjaja said on Friday.

Ketut said the group is committed to fulfill the promise of distributing the apartment keys to buyers in December 2018.

Meikarta is the biggest project in Lippo's 67 years' history, with the total investment estimated at Rp 278 trillion ($21 billion).

Located in the heart of Indonesia's economic activities, the Jakarta-Bandung corridor, the modern giant city will offer various world-class facilities within it integrated area of 3,000 hectares owned by Lippo Group's industrial township developer Lippo Cikarang.

Tourists to Indonesia Should Respect the Holy Month Of Ramadan

"O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint."
—Surah Bakarah 2:183

Indonesia had a population of 4,225,000 as of January 2014.

According to the 2010 Census, 83.5% of Bali's population adhered to Balinese Hinduism, followed by 13.4% Muslim, Christianity at 2.5%, and Buddhism 0.5%.

We can safely assume that Bali's population currently has as many as 4,400,000 Indonesians of which 14 % are Muslim.

Therefore there may be 60,000 Muslims living full time in Bali.

There is also a large transient Muslim population working in construction.

So there may be as many as 80,000 Muslims celebrating the holy month of Ramadan.

It's important to understand that most Muslims will be fasting for Ramadan which means no food or drink during the daytime hours.

Breaking the fast[edit]

Muslims traditionally break their fasts in Ramadan with dates (like those offered by this date seller in Kuwait City), as was the recorded practice (Sunnah) of Muhammad.
Many mosques will provide iftar (literally: break fast) meals after sundown for the community to come and end their day's fasting as a whole. It is also common for such meals to take place at Muslim soup kitchens. The fast is broken with a date (when possible) following the tradition of Muhammad, or with water.

Eating, drinking, and sexual relations are not allowed between dawn (fajr), and sunset (maghrib).

They will usually rise in the early morning around 3:30 AM to 4:00 AM to enjoy a healthy breakfast followed by reciting versus form the
Qur'an

Most will then answer the call to prayers at the Mosques and then return home or head to work.

It is important for tourists and Non - Muslim locals to respect these traditions and understand that many Muslim workers may have less energy as the day comes to and end.

Many Muslim businesses will be closed during the daytime hours especially Muslim Restaurants and Massage Spas .

Overall tourists to Bali will barely notice these traditions.

Fasting during Ramadan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a sub-article to Fasting in Islam and Ramadan
During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims are obligated to fast (Arabicصوم‎‎, sawm), every day from dawn to sunset. Fasting requires the abstinence from food, drink and sexual activity.
Fasting the month of Ramadān was made obligatory (wājib) during the month of Sh’abān, in the second year after the Muslims migrated from Makkah to Madīnah.

Fasting the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, as shown by a quote from the Companion Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) say: 'The religion of Islam is based upon five (pillars): testifying that there is no deity except God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God; establishing the prayer; giving zakat; making pilgrimage; and fasting (the month) of Ramadan.'" [Bukhari; Muslim]

The Qur'an[edit]

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is specifically mentioned in three consecutive verses of the Qur'an:
O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint.
—Surah Bakarah 2:183
(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.
—Surah Bakarah 2:184

Prohibitions during Ramadan[edit]

Fast break at Taipei Grand Mosque in Taiwan.
Eating, drinking, and sexual relations are not allowed between dawn (fajr), and sunset (maghrib). Fasting is considered an act of deeply personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised level of closeness to God.
During Ramadan, Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, angry/sarcastic retorts, gossip, and are meant to try to get along with each other better than normal. All obscene and irreligious stimuli are to be avoided as purity of both thought and action is important.

Exceptions[edit]

Fasting during Ramadan is not obligatory for several groups for whom it would be excessively problematic. According to the Qur'an, if fasting would be dangerous to an individual's health such as those with a medical condition or the aged, they are excused.
Pre-pubescent children are not required to fast, though some choose to do so, and some small children fast for half a day to train themselves. If puberty is delayed, fasting becomes obligatory for males and females after a certain age. Diabetics and nursing or pregnant women are usually not expected to fast. According to a hadith, observing the Ramadan fast is forbidden for menstruating women.
Other individuals for whom it is usually considered acceptable not to fast are those in battle, and travellers who intend to spend fewer than five days away from home. If the circumstance preventing fasting is temporary, a person is required to make up for the missed days after the month of Ramadan is over and before the next Ramadan arrives. Should the circumstance be permanent or present for an extended amount of time, one may recompense by feeding a needy person for every day missed.
If one does not fit into any category of exemption and breaks the fast out of forgetfulness, the fast is still valid. Intentionally breaking the fast voids it, and the person must make up for the entire day later. If one breaks the fast intentionally or through consensual sexual intercourse, the transgressor must make up for the day by fasting for sixty consecutive days, freeing a slave or feeding sixty people in need.[1]
During a 2013 poliomyelitis outbreak in Somalia, some groups of aid workers were granted an exemption for the oral polio vaccine.[2]

Muslims traditionally break their fasts in Ramadan with dates (like those offered by this date seller in Kuwait City), as was the recorded practice (Sunnah) of Muhammad.

Rulings for a fasting person[edit]

Linguistically, the word fasting in the Arabic language means unconditional 'restraint' (imsak) from any action or speech during any time. According to the Sacred Law, fasting is the act of:
  1. refraining from engaging in sexual activity, and;
  2. refraining from entering anything into the body cavity;
  3. whether deliberately or accidentally;
  4. from the time the sun begins to rise to the time the sun sets;
  5. accompanied with the intention of fasting;
  6. from individuals who are permitted to fast.
'Refraining from engaging in sexual activity' includes actual sexual intercourse and ejaculation caused by foreplay. 'Refraining from entering anything into the body cavity' refers to the acts of entering food, drink, or medicine into the body cavity, regardless of whether this is a typical item one would enter into the body cavity or not. Entering any of these substances inside the body cavity means that the substance enters into the throat, the intestines, the stomach, or the brain by way of the nose, the throat, the private parts, or open wounds. 'Whether deliberately or accidentally' excludes forgetful acts of eating, drinking, or sexual activity. 'From the time the sun begins to rise to the time the sun sets' refers to the true entering of the Fajr time to the entering of the Maghrib time. 'Accompanied with the intention of fasting' means that one must intend to fast in order to distinguish if one is really performing an act of worship or not when one refrains from eating, drinking, or having sexual intercourse. For example, if one were to merely stay away from food, drink, or sexual activity without an intention to fast, then this fast is not valid and does not count. 'From individuals who are permitted to fast' means that one must be free from a situation that would prevent the validity of one's fast, such as menstruation or lochia (post-natal bleeding).[Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah; Ala al-Din Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-Alaiyya; Shurunbulali Imdad al-Fattah][3]
