Freezing Toronto Temps Break 57-Year Record

#Bali #News - All I can say is thank god I am in Vancouver where it is above freezing

By News Staff via CityNews-24 hours ago-TWC Canada

Toronto's waterfront on December 28, 2017. CITYNEWS

(CityNews) The weather outside continues to be frightful with a bone-chilling record being broken in Toronto on Thursday morning.

Temperatures dipped to -22 degrees without windchill being factored in. The previous record low was -18.9 set 57 years ago in 1960.

Environment Canada issued a slew of extreme cold weather alerts for the city and the rest of the GTA with the windchill making it feel closer to -30. The warning from the agency ended for Toronto and the GTA mid-day Thursday, but the city’s own cold weather alert remains in effect.

The length of this cold snap is not the norm for this time of year according to Environment Canada. The last time the city experienced similar conditions between Christmas and Jan. 1 was back in 1993.

Residents are warned that frostbite and hypothermia can set in quickly at these frigid temperatures — so bundle up and cover up any exposed skin.

And it’s not just flesh and bones that feel the chill, vehicles and other machinery could also be affected — like the GO train doors that were jamming up earlier in the day.

“It’s so cold out that sometimes mechanical things can break down and like your car doors, they can jam and a train can’t move if a door isn’t working,” says Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins. “They try and fix it and see if there’s something jammed in it perhaps. We ask customers not to try and force it open — that can break it altogether.”

The city is also urging everyone to call or visit vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours – especially isolated seniors. Be sure to keep an eye on your pets as well — limit the length of walks outside and be sure to protect their paws from icy roads and salt.

Bali ready for more Chinese tourists after lifting of travel warning

Bali News Editor's Comments.

This is great news for Bali as the Chinese Tourist is now the number one tourist to Bali.

I expect the Chinese tourist to return in hordes in 2018.

Not only will they buy tourist items but they will also buy real estate for the first time in history.

Therefore I expect the Chinese tourist to be one of the largest demands for real estate in Bali along with new retirement demand driving Bali real estate prices through the roof the next 3 or 5 years.

Bali ready for more Chinese tourists after lifting of travel warning

The Badung regency administration in Bali and local tourism players have welcomed the lifting of a Chinese travel warning.

"We're grateful that the Chinese government has lifted its travel warning, since the Indonesian government has convinced them that Bali is safe to visit and has given guarantees if visitors get stranded due to a Mount Agung eruption by issuing a cooperation statement," said Badung Tourism Agency head I Made Badra on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Following the move, Badra said foreign arrivals was estimated to reach 16,000 per day in January and hotel occupancy 75 percent of the 130,000 starred-hotel rooms available in Badung.

"We're optimistic that our target of attracting at least 5,000 Chinese tourists to Bali during Imlek in February 2018 can also be reach," he said.

The number of Chinese visitors to Bali decreased by 200,000 people per month after Mt. Agung erupted. "The decrease is quite big and we continue to make the best efforts for Bali tourism," said Badra, adding that Badung was usually visited by 16,000 foreign tourists per day, but the number had dropped to 15,000 after the eruption.

Badung Tourism Promotion Agency head IGA Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya said if Ngurah Rai Airport was closed because of an eruption, hoteliers were prepared to provide one free night accommodation.

"I'm still optimistic that many Chinese tourists will come to Bali, especially in February to celebrate Imlek," he said. (kes)

Bitcoin is surging towards a serious mining problem — and no one knows what will happen when it gets there

Jasper Pickering

Dec. 25, 2017, 4:00 AM 18,624

Business Insider UK spoke with Garrick Hileman about Bitcoin mining.
Hileman explains why Bitcoin mining might not be as profitable in the future.
As more users are mining Bitcoin, the amount rewarded for doing so is going down.

Business Insider UK spoke with University of Cambridge Research Fellow Garrick Hileman about cryptocurrency mining and the potential problems that it could bring in the future.

He explains that the amount of Bitcoin rewarded for mining is halved every four years which means that it will be less profitable.

Read the full transcript below.

Garrick Hileman: So as we look into the future and the reward of new Bitcoins is reduced from the current 12.5 to about 6.25 new Bitcoins every ten minutes which will occur in around July 2020.

Every four years that reward gets cut in half. Eventually you get to the point where the nominal number of new Bitcoins you earn for mining Bitcoin becomes quite small. Now if the price of Bitcoin continues to climb above 100,000 per Bitcoin, then mining a tiny fraction of Bitcoin still is quite lucrative.

But ultimately the number of new Bitcoins coming into existence through mining will be cut to zero. We’ll hit the 21 million limit and the only direct financial incentive left to mine Bitcoin will be transaction fees and there’s an open question as to whether or not the transaction fees will provide a sufficient financial incentive to maintain the kind of computing power that Bitcoin enjoys today which is essential to its security.

If the computational power applied to the Bitcoin network is reduced sufficiently it arguably makes it easier to mount a 51 per cent attack to disrupt the network and so there could be some issues down the road if the rewards are not sufficient.

However there could be a reason to subsidise the cost of mining if Bitcoin continues to be a valuable asset because, simply, they own a lot of Bitcoin and so they are willing to lose money on mining to maintain a secure network.

Indonesia's Gunung Padang tourist site has educational value

Editors Comments: I highly advise visiting this site which may date back before the pyramids.

Around 500 hundred people visited Gunung Padang megalithic site in Campaka district, Cianjur, West Java, over the Christmas weekend.

One of the site's attendants, Nanang, told Antara news agency on Tuesday that the number of visitors significantly increased from regular weekends, when 300 people per day usually visited.

"For today, the number is estimated to be more than 500. People are still coming late in the afternoon, despite road repairs slightly disrupting traffic," said Nanang.

The management expects the number of visits to increase further until school holidays end.

As more tourists are coming, more attendants have been assigned.

"Their task is to remind visitors not to sit on or damage the site," said Nanang.

Among the visitors to Gunung Padang that day were dozens of groups from Jakarta who came with family members to provide the children with knowledge.

"We learned about this place a long time ago from television, but it's only this year that we've been able to visit with the family. Gunung Padang is full of cultural and educational value for children, hence we decided to come here over the holiday," said 40-year-old Gina from South Jakarta. (kes)

Bali packed with tourists on Christmas day despite volcanic eruptions

I am very happy to see that my prediction I made before leaving Bali for a ski vacation has come true, in that tourists have taken advantage of 50% discounts on hotels because of volcano fears and have returned in droves.

My personal villa has been 70% occupied and our Bail Luxury Villas at huge discounts are 74% occupied last night.

I will now predict that 2018 will see another year of record tourism in Bali.

Hope this news brightens your holidays.

Happy New Year from my family and staff_____________

Foreign tourists arrive on speedboat at the Padangbai harbour in Karangasem regency on the Indonesian resort island of Bali on October 3, 2017. Mount Agung, 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the resort hub of Kuta, has been shaking since August and threatening to erupt for the first time since 1963 -- a potential blow to the island's lucrative tourism industry. (Agence France-Presse/Sonny Tumbelaka)
Local and international tourists are flocking to some destinations on the resort island of Bali on Christmas day on Monday despite Mount Agung’s continuous eruptions.

Mount Agung erupted again on Sunday, spewing ash 2.5 kilometers high. However, the government has assured that the resort island is safe for tourists.

“Bali appeals [to me] more than other regions. Though the eruption has gone viral on social media, it has not discouraged me from visiting Bali,” Anita, a tourist from Jakarta, told Antaranews.com in Gianyar on Monday.

Anita said she was not worried with the eruption because she knew that Mount Agung was located far away from most tourist destinations. For example, it is located about 75 km from the resort hub of Kuta.

“What’s more is that the government has assured that if Ngurah Rai Airport suddenly closes people will be looked after,” said Anita, who was on holiday in Bali with her family until the New Year.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Sunday that until now 71, 045 local residents had moved to 239 displaced person points prepared by the government throughout the island. He also stated that Bali “is still safe” for tourists.

“Bali is safe. Do not be afraid to visit Bali,” Sutopo said in a statement. (saf/ahw)

Bitcoin Has Already Bounced Back 40% After the Huge Crash

I'm happy for my friends who own bitcoin which has recovered much of its losses from last week but I want to warn you it is the most volatile, dangerous investment I've seen in my 40 years of investments.

The only thing that is fueling it is a bunch of idiots getting in at these  later stages.

In 2018 it will collapse again and  the next time may be the end.
_________________________________________________________ause

By DAVID Z. MORRIS
December 23, 2017

Bitcoin’s price has rebounded by over 40% in the last 24 hours, climbing from a low under $11,000 to over $15,300 at this writing. That followed a steep five-day drop of more than 40% from record highs of over $19,600, as measured by Coindesk’s index.

After the crash and rebound, investors who bought Bitcoin as recently as late November have still seen nearly 80% returns. A broad spectrum of other cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum and Litecoin, have seen parallel recoveries.

During the crash, the major exchange Coinbase experienced an outage due to high traffic – possibly an indicator of its huge crop of new investors panic-selling. But such wild swings are nothing new for Bitcoin, and even in the midst of the crash, longtime advocates on Bitcoin forums were celebrating the price drop as a “discount” and urging each other to “buy the dip.”

That confidence has deep roots. Even in the midst of this year’s massive cryptocurrency run-up, there have been several major corrections. Bitcoin crashed by nearly 40% in September. From Nov. 8 to Nov. 12, the price dropped from $7,459 to $5,857 – nearly 22% – before heading back up to $16,858 by Dec. 7. Then it tanked nearly 12% in two days before working its way back up to a high above $19,300 by December 16th.

Going further back, Bitcoin crashed by 68% in two days back in June of 2011, 36% in one day in January 2012, and 33% over five days in March of 2013. All of those crashes took place at prices under $100, and some of them took months or even years to climb back from – but investors who held on, motivated by faith in Bitcoin’s long-term promise, have been spectacularly rewarded.

There’s no guarantee prior recoveries will repeat themselves, but as of this morning, history is looking like a good teacher.

Bali flights from $141 return - Luxury Villas 50% Off

Take $50+ off your Jetstar flight to Bali.

Jetstar is always up for a good sale, though this isn't just a good sale. It's a pretty great sale.

It's on flights to Bali and features fares as low as $141 return. When on sale, these fares typically go down to $99 each way, or $198 return. Calculate those savings and you're pocketing at least $50 from these flights.

The routes available include: Darwin to Bali from $141, Perth to Bali from $209, Melbourne to Bali from $393 and Sydney to Bali from $457 return.

Travel varies depending on your route with dates available from January-March and July-September 2018.

You can catch this sale at I Want That Flight, though it's only available for a limited time so catch it while you can!
How good are these fares?

The RRP for Jetstar fares to Bali starts from $99 each way, giving this sale an edge. Just $42 more and you can return. It's not the lowest we've seen fares offered by the budget airline, with $129 returns coming and going in October during the airline's "return for free" sale, but this sale still brings on the savings. It's particularly appealing for those flying out of Darwin, though at $457 for Sydney-siders it might be better to wait this out as this errs closer to the pricier end of the scale.
How good are these travel dates?

April-June and September-October are our recommended dates to visit Bali due to dry conditions and low-peak dates. While most routes in this sale feature February-March dates, some encompass August-September dates which are more optimal weather-wise.

Agung’s eruption worse than Bali bombing, say hoteliers

Bali news and views editor's comments – As one of Bali's oldest and most experienced Hoteliers I agree with the statement below that the recent loss in tourists and lost revenues surpasses even the Bali bombings.

Like the Bali bombings. This too shall pass. People are starting to come back already. In fact many people are realizing this is a rare opportunity to experience a active volcano which could possibly be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Very smart travellers are taking advantage of the discounts offered by most hotels including discounts upwards to 60% with private luxury villas renting for as low as $90 per night  with private pool. See Below Articile.

The bottom line is before the eruption Bali was ranked the number one destination in the world by Tripadvisor and will continue to be so in the future.

Bali is still paradise no act of nature will change that

By Mimi Hudoyo
/ Posted on 15 December, 2017 9:45

Hoteliers in Bali say the impact of Mount Agung’s eruption is larger than the 2002 Bali bombing, and are crying for more efforts and a bigger promotional budget to recover business losses.

Anak Agung Yuniarta Putra, head of Bali Tourism Office (BTO), said: “When the Bali bombing took place, (Jakarta injected) a budget of 750 billion rupiah (US$56 million today or worth US$81 million in 2002) immediately. But nothing has been offered for Bali’s recovery yet.”Impact of Mount Agung’s eruption on Bali’s tourism segment is being keenly felt

He stressed the need for the central government to continue promotions overseas to attract international travellers back to the island.

Haryadi Sukamdani, chairman of Indonesia Hotel & Restaurant Association (IHRA), told TTG Asia on the sidelines of the Visit Wonderful Indonesia 2018 launch recently that hotel occupancy post the airport closure was “alarming”.

“The impact is bigger than the Bali bombing. After the bombing, the recovery process could be done right after, while today we still do not know when the eruption is going to end. With travel warnings in place and insurance companies declining protection, it is not easy to convince travellers to come under such circumstances,” he lamented.

While Haryadi declined to mention the current occupancy of IHRA members in Bali, reports reveal that it is between 15 per cent and 25 per cent. This compares with an occupancy of around 80 per cent during the same period last year, according to BTO’s Putra.

In addition, the Indonesia National Air Carriers Association (INACA) was quoted by Kontan.co.id as saying that flights to Bali had declined by 30 per cent as the result of the eruption. INACA’s head of flight affairs, Bayu Sutanto, opined that the trend would continue up to early next year as long as the high alert status of the volcano remains.

Last week, Indonesia’s tourism minister Arief Yahya estimated that there has been a loss of around a million arrivals due to the eruption.

Arief said: “Following the closure of the airport, daily arrivals to Bali was between 3,000 and 9,000 passengers, while average arrivals (on a normal day) is 15,000. This means a loss of around 250 billion rupiah per day.”

The minister has urged for “domestic travellers to spend their holidays in Bali and companies to stage events on the island”.

However, Indonesia’s two major inbound tour operators Panorama Destination and Pacto claimed that the impact on their business was low as the eruption took place during the low season. Although it is now the December holiday season, it is not as big as the June-August peak season.

Marcel Schneider, managing director of Panorama Destination, said: “With the exception of some group cancellations from India, we have had few cancellations. The reason for that might be that the majority of our clients come from European source markets (and this is not the season for Europeans).

“There is never a good moment for this to happen as it will affect the livelihood of lots of people. But in the low season, consequences will hopefully be less severe,” he shared.

Ratty Ning, president director of Pacto, said: “We lost around nine billion rupiah due to the eruption and closure of the airport, (but) that is only about three to four per cent of our total business this year.”

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a children's story by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" . It follows the Grinch, a grouchy, solitary creature who attempts to put an end to Christmas by stealing Christmas-themed items from the homes of the nearby town Whoville on Christmas.

It dawned on me today that two weeks before Christmas Bali's Mount Agung, is similar to the Grinch has stolen Christmas from Bali.
Just two weeks after Bali was named the number one destination in the the world by Tripadvisor the Grinch decided to act up and scare all the many tourist's into cancelling their reservations leavings thousands of hotel rooms. restaurants, bars, nightclubs and even the massage spa's  empty.

Even though Bali's Mount Agung Volcano has simmered down and the airport has been open again for almost two weeks Bali's Hotel occupancies have dropped significantly.
